About

St. Peter’s “English” Lutheran Church was organized on June 4, 1896. Dr. I. O. Baker of Luther Memorial Church in Erie, installed the officers on Sunday, June 7, 1896, and after three months with student intern Mr. William Hall supplying the pulpit, The Rev. I. H. Stetler was unanimously called as Pastor of the Congregation.

On December 17, 1898, a lot was purchased at the corner of Pearl and Eagle streets, with the corner-stone laid on September 6, 1900. This stone now resides along the foundation of our current building on Freeport Road.

In 1901, the congregation voted to delete “English” from the name, and it was not until they voted again on November 27, 1904, that “Evangelical” was added. St. Peter’s charter was granted on August 21, 1905, with the official name, St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In 1963, having outgrown the original building at Pearl and Eagle streets, six acres of vineyards between North Pearl Street and Route 89 were purchased for future expansion. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new church building was on October 26, 1976, and work was completed on November 14, 1976, surrounded by the remaining three acres of vineyards.

What We Believe
